Sometimes I find myself slipping into a reverie that isn't mine. Daydreams and fleeting fantasies of a life we could have if we were but two ordinary individuals from our respective homes. A wish for us to stay together even as duty demands us apart. A reality that can never be hence why I don't dwell on such desires—unlike you who clings to an out-of-reach dream.

"I understand that neither of us is in any position to take an extended leave from our posts unless absolutely necessary, but..."

Your voice was softer than usual. A tad shaky even from the nerves I could hear bubbling up. So rare but so like you to worry over something that really you didn't need to worry over at all.

"I'll visit again soon," I assured with a smile that instantly relaxed you. "Your home is such a warm place, your people lovely, and the land breathtaking. There are countless memories I'd be honored to immortalize here." My gaze shifted first to the city before us and then passed to the endless expanse of water beyond the docks. "Not least of all our time together, brief as it was."

"Heh, hopefully next time you won't need to defend against an invasion," you said with a forced laugh.

I placed my hand over yours, my attention never shifting from the calm waves. "I did get to prolong my stay here to tend to the wounded so there was some good that came of it." Pushing myself to stand, I held a hand out for you to take. "Let's make the most of my last few days here starting with a tour of the city—a proper tour mind you. Not another dismissive listing of places of note like you gave when I first arrived."

It took most of my strength to pull you to your feet, your smile alone sending my heart racing. "Alright alright, you deserve that much at least," you conceded. "We'll start with the Dirigible Landing and work our way further into the city from there." Your hold on my hand tightened as you gently tugged for me to follow your lead. "Sound good?"

My smile brightened. "That sounds lovely."

Confessions (pt. 1)

This is part 8 of my fic A New Kind of Familiar. Tags and other chapters can be found here!

Confessions can be on purpose or accidental. They can take weight off of your chest or add to the burden on your shoulders. They can bring people closer or they can tear people apart.

Mikey visited him quite often, trying to lift his spirits, he supposed. Leo had announced that if he was well enough to hold a conversation, he was well enough to work, and he had a suspicion that Mikey was around to keep him from doing anything.

“So, I guess Splinter Jr.’s back, huh?” he muttered, casting a look toward Mikey. When Leo wasn’t breathing down his neck, he supposed that he could say Mikey was indeed giving his spirits the barest of boosts. The younger gave a huff of laughter.

“Yeah. Donnie, you know you can tell him, right?”

“No I can’t. You know that. Not until he calms down, at the very least.”

“If you can’t do it, then we should start grieving. So we can cope. The more you let him have hope, the worse it’ll be.”

“You try telling him. He won’t listen to me, since he thinks I’m trying to run away from it now,” he huffed, sighing. “I’m not, I just…”

“It isn’t your fault, Donnie. You know that, right?”

His younger brother was looking at him, those blue eyes making contact with his own when he turned. His breath caught.

“And maybe…maybe there was a reason. Maybe this was meant to happen. Maybe we’ll get him back when it’s time.”

“I doubt that, Mikey.”

“I mean what I said, though. This isn’t your fault. I pushed the button. I didn’t do anything to help the situation, and I’m still not— whatever, it’s just us now, huh? B-Team for life, Donnie.” The snapper gave him a small smile, holding out his fist. The taller returned it, bumping his fist against the other’s.

“B-Team for life.”

Raph was, to say the least, very worried and very much panicking. Ruby had snapped and ran away and nobody had gone after him, saying he needed space, and Raph…

Fuck. Raph didn’t know what to do. Mikey stared at Pops, the rat looking offended, confused, and hurt.

“Dad, what happened?”

“I simply wished to talk to him! I asked why he was avoiding me and expressed my concerns, and he disclosed that his own version of myself passed. I do not know why he got so frustrated.”

“Did you do that tunnel vision thing you do sometimes?”

“Leo, see if you can find out where he is. I don’t think it’s a good idea for him to be out in the city alone.”

“I doubt that was why,” Splinter muttered.

“I mean, from what I could tell, it didn't seem like you were really listening to him, Dad.”

“He was not listening to me! I simply—“

“Dad, I know you mean well, and that you’re worried, but you have to listen to him. You can’t guess at what he needs, he has to tell you . And you can’t force him to. Okay?”

The rat sighed, nodding. He looked properly apologetic, which he guessed was good. Leo wasn’t back yet. Should he check on him? He should, right? The snapper left the room, going to look for the slider. Said turtle was on the phone, voice soft and soothing. Raph didn’t try to hear what was being said, just allowed that to simultaneously ease and elevate his worries. Leo was leaving the lair not long after, and Raph just sighed.

“Raph, wanna help me? I was gonna make some hot chocolate for Ruby, but I dunno what to put in it,” Mikey’s voice startled him, the box turtle heading to the kitchen.

“Oh, sure, I think I have a few ideas.”

“Good! Cmon!”

Leo doesn’t know what he was expecting when he climbed up onto the roof. At first, he didn’t see anyone or anything. “Ruby?”

A small whine is what led him to check near the HVAC. “Hey, Ruby, we gotta get you home.”

Immediately, the shorter turtle was protesting, shuffling away from him.

“No,” the mutant said, his voice holding an edge Leo couldn’t name. “Don’t you dare try to send me back, or else I will throw you off this damned roof. It’s been so long since I had to hear Splinter Jr. complaining about everything I do wrong, and you’re trying to make me go back? I don’t have to stay with you guys anymore if you don’t want, but I’m not…I’m not going back there.”

“No, not back there,” he was quick to assure, filing away that new concern for later. “I'm gonna take you back to the lair. CJ voted tonight to be Disney Movie Night. Remember?”

The mutant was out of it. “Cmon.”

After a moment's hesitation, the other stood, walking over and stopping a short distance from him.

“What I said…I didn’t…”

“I know. Cmon, let’s go home.”

By the time Leo got Ruby home, the box turtle was completely out of it. He said as much when he brought the other to the living room, where Mikey, Raph, and Cj were waiting. Mikey simply pressed a mug of still-hot hot chocolate into the other’s hands, rubbing his thumbs over the other’s knuckles.

“Where was he?” Mikey asked, turning to face Leo.

“He got pretty far. He was close to the anti-mutant side of the city.”

His younger brother hummed. Raph looked at the smallest terrapin, worry written clear on his face. Mikey simply continued to tap patterns into Ruby’s hands with his fingers, humming a tune. Leo walked over to Raph and put a hand on his forearm. “He’s gonna be okay, big guy. We all have our bad days. And you know how talking to Dad is when he gets tunnel vision,” he murmured, the snapper sighing.

“I know.”

When Ruby came around, he was slightly confused and disoriented, but all in all not distressed by where he was. He apologized for what he’d said and said he didn’t mean it (not that he said sorry to dad, but honestly, Leo didn’t want to push for those two to talk again for a while), and the family soon settled to watch The Lion King.

Ruby nestled into the side of the couch, squished by Mikey, who was squished by Leon and April. The orange-coded turtle was nuzzled into Ruby’s side, while Leo was strewn across the laps of the whole couch. He’d talk to his family about any concerns he had later. They could have this for now.
